Reiki and Vipassana Meditation

Is Reiki compatible with Vipassana?

My personal view is that Reiki and Vipassana are not in conflict but have different purposes so they should be practiced accordingly. Vipassana is the fundamental meditation for attaining enlightenment. Reiki is extension of one of the practices within Vipassana known as Metta.

The purpose of Reiki is to clean the chakras, heal people physically, mentally and emotionally so that they can practice Vipasana or other meditation and gain the ultimate freedom.



Remember that Reiki founder Mikao Usui was a Buddhist Monk. He was practicing Vipassana or similar meditation. Like many other Buddhist Monks he wanted to help people. His intention was to find a way to help more people, faster.

People get attracted to Reiki for various reasons. Many people learn about Reiki because they want to solve a physical health issue. They they get interested in the spiritual side of Reiki. Then they learn Reiki level 1 and the journey begins.

Resolving Vipassana - Reiki Conflict.

Reiki is not incompatible with Vipassana because they both have same origin. In both the practices you are an observer. Even in Reiki we acknowledge that we are not the doers. The only difference is when you practice Reiki you have a goal or intention. The intention could be to heal yourself or others at the level of body, mind, emotions or spirit.

In Vipassana, you do not have any intention other than Nirvana. To become free of all the vikaras by observing whatever is arising in your body / mind in this moment. Vipassana is the purest form of meditation. No meditation is as pure or as scientific as Vipassana.

Why the Buddhist Monks practiced something similar to Reiki? Buddhist Monks are only interested in Nirvana. Which is the fruit of the practice of Vipassana meditation. Sometimes when the body is not in optimum health, Reiki is used to get the body back in good shape. Then the monks get back to the practice of Vipassana meditation with full determination.

The second reason Buddhist Monks used Reiki was to bring serious students to a higher level of consciousness faster. Students who are struggling on the spiritual path due various issues like health, self control, survival etc. find it difficult to practice Vipassana meditation. If they are left on their own they will take a lot of time to reach higher level and may not attain Nirvana in this lifetime.

Monks who have transcended to higher levels, (maybe even attained Nirvana) feel compassion for these students who are struggling on the part of freedom. Out of compassion they give Reiki to their chakras so that they can move to higher levels quickly. They can then focus on their spiritual goals and not get distracted by health and wealth issues.

The great Buddhist Monks and even many senior Reiki Masters have the same intention when giving attunement to their students. They want them to be healthy and wealthy so that they can practice meditation better and progress on the spiritual path.

Use Reiki & Vipassana Meditation appropriately

Vipassana and Reiki are not in Conflict. I encourage all Reiki fans to learn Vipassana. While learning Vipassana do not practice Reiki. In my Reiki Courses I encourage my students to learn and practice Vipassana. Reiki is a helpful tool to resolve problems that come on the spiritual path. Vipassana is the ultimate meditation for spiritual progress. From this point of view you can see how Reiki and Vipassana go hand in hand.

Every one may not get attracted to Vipassana immediately. Only after resolving the basic needs and having the time & resources to be able to spend 10 days for the Vipassana course, some fortunate souls are able to experience the beautiful Vipassana meditation. But many people who are busy in achieving their worldly goals don't end up at the Vipassana course.

They come across Reiki, because Reiki helps them achieve or solve immediate goals & problems at physical, mental & emotional level. In 1 day they can learn how Reiki works and start practicing. After resolving the immediate issues these souls take on the spiritual path and progress on it. Reiki is a door opener to the spiritual realm for many people.

After learning and practicing Vipassana for your own growth if you are interested in helping lots and lots of people, learn Reiki level 1, 2, 3 and become a Reiki Master and teach others how to grow holistically and make this world a better place for everyone.

Is Reiki Compatible with Christianity?

Reiki is an abundantly practiced healing method. It is believed that, it was discovered and developed by Sensai Mikao Usui. The founder of Reiki happened to be a Buddhist Monk. Just as Einstein's theory of relativity has nothing to do with his religion, Reiki is practiced by people of all religions.

Reiki needs to be studied independent of the religion of it's founder. It is noteworthy that Mikao Usui also studied Christianity and he had equal respect towards all the religions including Christianity.



According to him Reiki is not a religious practice. Reiki is simply a healing method helpful for all human being. Reiki breaks the barrier to the flow of life energy or the vital energy in the human body.

These barriers are developed by the negative energies coming from the negative thoughts, emotions and actions. This negative energy affects every individual. It does not many which religion a person belongs.

Reiki is meant for all the individual of the world for their healthy, happy and prosperous life. Just as people of all religions use 'light bulb' irrespective of the religion of the person who discovered or invented it. Similarly all people can practice Reiki for their betterment.

Reiki is not only related to the Buddhist practice and it is not only helpful for the Buddhist followers. Rather it is helpful for the entire human society. The healing energy of Reiki is present in the Universe. 

The practice of energy healing technique like Reiki is not related to one religion rather it is a path of spirituality. By learning it you can heal and protect yourselves from negativity.

What does Christianity say about Reiki?

Reiki is the practice that is similar to Lord Jesus Christ’s healing process for the sick.  Most of the sacred quotes of Holy Bible give the examples of Lord Jesus Christ’s practice of energy healing. Lord Jesus Christ healed people from their diseases.

The practice of Reiki will keep you cool and calm and take you closer to Lord Jesus Christ.  If you are interested to learn Reiki, you have to convince yourself that the God has selected you as a healer for the human society.

The intelligent, thoughtful and committed Christians keep on searching the proper information and try to understand the concept of Reiki and relating it with the saying of the Holy Bible.

Why Reiki is not against Christianity or any other religion?

According to Reiki, all the diseases are due to the blockage of the life force or the vital force inside the body. The flow of the life force is obstructed by the negative thoughts, feelings and emotions.

The practices of energy healing therapies like Reiki are based on this believe. The practice of healing energy is not at all harmful for religious people.

The Holy Bible says that Lord Jesus came to the world to heal. He said “Come to me, all of you who carry heavy burdens (negative energies), and I’ll give you rest”. If you have love and believe for Lord Jesus then you can practice Reiki without hesitation.

Why is Reiki not in conflict of any religion?

First of all you have to understand that Reiki is an energy healing process for the human society to gain a healthy, wealthy and prosperous life. Reiki is for any individual belonging to any religion who have a desire to lead a healthy, wealthy and prosperous life.

In Reiki a universal energy is working to heal all the negative energies causing harm to any person. This energy is not related to a particular religion.

You can find the examples of using the universal healing energy in all the religions like Hinduism, Christianity, and Buddhism etc. This universal healing energy comes from the universe not from the healer’s hand. It comes from the universe and flows into the receiver's body through the healer’s hand.

The motto of all the religions is to spread the love and prosperity among the human society. Reiki also does the same thing by using the universal energy. So, Reiki does not have any conflicts with any religions.

You have to understand the concept of Reiki and the saying of the Holy Bible. Co-relate these and you will definitely find that, there is compatibility between Christianity and the practice of Reiki. The practice of Reiki will definitely make you closer to Lord Jesus Christ.

Now days a number of Christians have become Reiki practitioners are practicing Reiki regularly and they have become more close to God. You can find Reiki practitioners organizing Reiki Circles in Churches as well. These people have understood the real meaning of the sayings of the Holy Bible and the relationship between the sayings of the Holy Bible and the concept of Reiki.
